To be held on Saturday 21 February from 3 – 9pm, the festival marks the new lunar year on the Chinese calendar and celebrates the Year of the Goat.

Mayor Tom Tate issued an open invitation to the Gold Coast community to come along and be part of the Chinatown experience.

“I’m hoping to see thousands of people fill the streets to enjoy our newest multicultural destination, which is still evolving. I’m looking forward to seeing new businesses and retailers move into the precinct as Chinatown takes shape over the coming year,” he said.

“The highlight of the festival will be the Asian food market, where you’ll be able to enjoy a multicultural feast under the stars with live music. The streets will be transformed into a delicious and inspiring cultural bazaar right in the heart of our CBD.

“This event represents the first of a series of ongoing openings for Chinatown. The food market will become a regular feature on the Gold Coast night time social calendar.”

The evening program also includes lion dancing, workshops with lantern painting and calligraphy, roving entertainment, outdoor cinema, traditional performances and interactive activities for children, finishing with a fireworks display at 9pm.

“Chinatown will provide a place where the local community, international students and visitors can come together to share unique cultural and dining experiences,” said Cr Tate.

“This festival welcomes everyone to celebrate our local multicultural community. Bring along family and friends, a picnic blanket and your festive spirit, and get ready to celebrate this exciting new dimension to our city!”
